The key to great martial arts training is to learn the foundation arts of the your martial art. For example: in Ninpo Taijutsu, the foundation arts are found in building great balance, movement skills, grappling skills, striking skills, ground hitting, weapon use and also the interrelationship of the mind and body etc. Out of a good understanding of the foundation arts of martial arts you will have the ability to handle yourself in a tight spot. Warning: don’t be in a hurry to learn so-called advance training. Like an old teacher said, “without the foundation arts you have no martial arts. You only have ego trying to balance on air.” Have the ability to use the foundation arts as a system unto itself. This will lead naturally to your next level of understanding. I personally like a very organic approach to learning and studying martial arts. Please be patient with your studies.

I was working on kenjutsu last week and was moving with my training partner changing kamae (position based on what my spirit is sensing in relation to a changing environment). This requires the mind and body to stay sharp, because if your mind floats for one moment you could be in over your head. A good starting place on how not to get in over your head is “Stay in the moment, not before or after.”
The longer we train in martial arts, the deeper we come to understand ourselves. This deep understanding comes from first training with the physical techniques and then studying the effect the training has on us. If you train with a sincere heart, you can gain great value from martial arts.
