One of the things that I find most inspiring about self-defense class at the Boston Martial Arts Center is the quality of people that train. Over the years of running a dojo (school) I see people come and go each person that steps in the door has their own unique way of looking at the world. And I think that is very important. What we encourage at our dojo is independent thinking. When studying and teaching self-defense it is very important to see the world from many angles and many views. Remember the enemy of an open mind will want you to be closed-minded and uninformed.

We teach the fundamental building blocks of self-defense each week. We like to take small steps for easy and correct learning. This past week we worked on keeping good balance and limiting the attacker’s ability to control us so we could escape. When using martial arts for self-defense you want to limit the attacker’s ability to control you. Staying in control of your mind and body is the first line of defense.
