I was teaching a martial arts seminar in Western Massachusetts at an old friend’s school. His students had very open minds about their learning. But then I realized that it was their teacher – how he carried himself and acted around his students help them relax. He was not critical of other martial arts or people. He was just very relaxed, self-assured and had a clear heart. This showed in his students and family.
When studying martial arts for self-defense we should keep a clear heart and mind. We should not engage in foolishness or childish quarrels that could lead to unnecessary problems. Our skills and knowledge are there to help and protect people – not to hurt or subjugate others.

In self-defense we seek not to hurt. We only seek balance. You see in self-defense, it not about wining or losing it is about the ending of violence and bringing a balance and order to things. Without balance and order the universe cannot flow. This paradigm shift is very important to do when you want to grow as a person also. It is not about being soft, or ego. It is about balance.
